BUSY, BUSY, BUSY YEAR!

It's been a busy year but I don't have much to show for it at the moment. I've done a lot but nothing that I can share here except for the above which is artwork for a book by Joel Jenkins called ONE FOOT IN MY GRAVE which will be available in 2013. It was a departure for me because it was not a fantasy or science fiction book but a biography.

I've also done some SF and fantasy covers and in 2013 which I hope to be able to share with you soon, as well as an amazing wraparound cover which is as exciting as all hell and which is just starting to come together now.

I will also be doing the covers for a four-book series which I am SUPER excited about!

I also have a number of projects, some secret, some not-so secret (like the fact that I will be blogging for the brand new AMAZING STORIES website) and my alter-ego, Jack Mackenzie's second book, DEBT's PLEDGE which will be available in 2013.

Jack Mackenzie will also have some more KA SIRTAGO AND POET books available for Kindle and other e-reading devices and hopefully a print version as well.

So to all you who have stuck with me during these long and fulsome tirades about myself, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You guys are all fantastic and I wish you all the best in 2013.

FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK

There aren't many Christmas songs that include lyrics like: "You scumbag. You maggot. You cheap, lousy faggot." Yet FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK by the Pogues and Kirsty McColl, still manages to have a haunting, lyrical quality.

So, given what has been visited on New York (and other areas of the U.S.) this year, I think this bittersweet Christmas song is an appropriate choice.

I'LL SAY IT AGAIN... I'M OFFICIALLY AN AMAZING BLOGGER

I'm repeating this post because I'm not sure it's coming up in people's dashboards. That plus I'm just so Goddamned chuffed about it...

On Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013, I will be joined by more than 50 other writers from around the blogosphere to help launch the Beta Test of Phase 1 of the return of Amazing Stories.

Amazing Stories was the world's first science fiction magazine. Published by Hugo Gernsback, the Father of Science Fiction, the magazine created the genre's first home and was instrumental in helping to establish science fiction fandom – the fandom from which all other fandoms have evolved.

The magazine itself ceased publication in 2005; in 2008 the new publisher, Steve Davidson, discovered that the trademarks had lapsed and applied for them. The marks were finally granted in 2011.

Phase 1 introduces the social networking aspects of the site and the Blog Team, more than 50 authors, artists, collectors, editors, pod casters, designers and bloggers who will address 14 different subjects on a regular basis – SF, Fantasy & Horror literature, anime, gaming, film, television, the visual arts, audio works, the pulps, comics, fandom, science and publishing.  

I can't tell you how excited I am to be part of this blog team. It is a great bunch of bloggers. Some of them are old friends and some of them are new, but it's a great group and I am proud to be a part of it.

I will be blogging about art, of course (among other things). I will be writing about the visual language of science fiction and fantasy. As the time grows closer I will be able to tell you more and provide links and hints as to what you will see. It's going to be exciting!

It's not going to change what happens here. i will still post pictures and videos and goofy stuff here and there. It's not going to change my life, either. It's not gonna make me rich and it's certainly not going to help me with the blocked bathroom sink that's looking more and more like it needs a plumber, nor will it help me keep the cats' litter box full nor help keep it clean.

Nevertheless, it's a great opportunity and I'm going to try to keep it light and fun. More importantly I hope that all of you will join me in January when all the fun begins.

Haddon Sundblom was most famous for his Santa Claus paintings done for the Coca Cola Company. But he could also do a decent Christmas pin-up when the need arose like this one he painted for Playboy in 1972.

PULPWORK PRESS released a sneak peak at the cover of their 2012 Christmas Special and look who's artwork is on the cover!

I can also say that I appear on this cover, as it was my own hand that I used as a reference for the white hairy ape arm that is menacing the heroes from Joel Jenkins' story.

There are also stories by my good buddies Joshua Reynolds and Derrick Ferguson. When it is available you should really treat yourself and pick up a copy because all those guys are such incredibly good writers.

PROOF THAT HE EXISTS!

People think that THE PHANTOM is just a comic book character created by Lee Falk. However, my daughter, who is at UBC studying to be Indiana Jones, came across this at the University's Museum of Anthropology tucked away in an exhibit on Africa. She snapped this photo with her iphone.

Proof that The Phantom was real! If that isn't a smoking gun I don't know what is.

MY DEAR SHERLOCK...

Sherlock;

You know that I love you. You are the best. The six episodes that we have had together have been magical and, honestly, there are few other shows that could take your place. That is what makes this letter so hard to write.

You see, my darling, I've been watching another show.

Yes. It's Elementary.

Look, Elementary is not you. It doesn't have the same style, nor half your intelligence. Nor does the actors have the same impact on me as yours do. In every way that matters, you are far superior. But... Elementary is there. It's there every thursday and it will be for the next four weeks and maybe another twenty after that. It's hard to say no to that kind of consistency.

I know it takes a lot of time and effort to make you as wonderful as you are. And I know that is difficult for you to do that right now, what with Benedict doing Star Trek, Martin doing The Hobbit and Mark Gatiss, playing Charles I at the Hampstead Theater until the end of November. I know it is just not possible for us to be together as much as I would like.

But it's not fair for you to expect me to wait. And Elementary, as pedestrian and run-of-the-mill as it is... well, it's on and you are not.

When you come back, you know I will drop everything in a heartbeat to be with you, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Smith. You know that I will. Until then I'll have to be content with Johnny Lee Miller and put up with Lucy Liu.

...IN WHICH I BATTLE A DEADLY CREATURE

I stared death in the face yesterday.

Sort of.

My wife found this guy on the back steps of the building in which we work.

Yup. A black widow spider.

Now, their bite is rarely fatal, but it their toxins do a bunch of nasty stuff to your body resulting in severe muscle and abdominal pain. if one of these ladies were to bite you, you'd know it.

So, braving, if not death, but certain physical discomfort, (and trying not to scream like a hysterical schoolgirl) I snapped a couple of pictures before finally vanquishing the foe.

I put paid to the bitch with the sole of my size 10's. That's one black widow that won't be tempting suitors anytime soon.

All in a day`s work for your run-of-the-mill working class hero.
